Ferret Facts What Ferrets Are Not
Ferrets are NOT "tamed wild
animals" and could not survive on their own outside. They are
domesticated animals and have been, according to some sources, for more
than 2,500 years. The domestic ferret is a separate species from its
wild cousins the weasel, otter, mink, and its more distant cousin, the
native American Black-Footed Ferret. Because of domestication, the
ferret has lost its ability to survive in the wild and depends totally
on humans for its survival. If released outside, a ferret would starve
to death or be killed by other animals.
Ferrets are NOT rodents. Ferrets are members of a family that
contains otters, weasels, skunks and polecats.
Ferrets are NOT cage animals and require a minimum of 2 hours
per day out of the cage to run, play, explore and bond with their
humans. In fact, ferrets are one of the most social of pets and crave a
great deal of interaction with their owners.
Ferrets are NOT vicious biters. Like any carnivorous animal,
ferrets have large canine teeth and yes, they are sharp. And just like
other domesticated animals (even some children!), ferrets will bite if
they are being attacked, threatened or otherwise provoked. However, most
ferrets are sweet-tempered little balls of joy who rarely bite.
What Ferrets Are
Ferrets ARE unique, curious, intelligent, affectionate,
wonderful companion animals who will positively enhance your life.
Ferrets ARE notorious little thieves. The word "ferret" means
"little thief" in Latin, and potential ferret owners should take heed.
Ferrets are well known for stealing everything from socks, underwear and
shoes, to car keys, jewelry and toys. You will find that your ferret
deposits his booty in several predetermined "stashes" throughout the
house. These might include under the bed or couch, under china hutches,
and in cabinets and drawers.
Ferrets ARE fairly expensive animals to properly care
for. From housing to litter to health care to food, ferrets have special
needs. See our Health section for more.
Ferrets ARE susceptible to disease and should be properly
vaccinated annually. Check out our Vaccinations section for more
information.
Ferrets ARE high maintenance animals who need a great deal of
attention and play time.
